Tsunami

I did a report on Tsunamis.  It was fun.  I got to type everything out on the computer and find cool pictures to add to it.  I learned lot's of fascinating things about tsunamis.  I got my information from Pebble Go Next.  Here is a copy of my report.

Tsunami
Attack

A tsunami is a series of massive waves.
A tsunami looks like a wall as it sweeps across the ocean. The swift wave zooms across the ocean and can powerfully cross it in twenty four hours. You need to be careful there could be more gigantic waves!

There are warning centers all over the world. The swift moving teams watch for earthquakes because it could mean a tsunami is coming. An advisory lets the public know when a tsunami is coming and it can help save lives.

There are ways to stay safe from a tsunami. There are physical signs that tell people when a tsunami is coming. The ground can start shaking and the tide starts going out fast. There can also be a loud rumbling and then the warning sirens start up. You need to get to a high place quickly so you can be safe.

I think tsunamis are exciting because they are gigantic waves that go crashing into cites. I also think they are scary. I am glad we don’t live near the ocean!

Eulachon

Eulachon are small fish that you can use to make oil and candles.  The first nations people would catch the fish.  Then, they would put the fish in a big tank and clean them, but with not too much water because they would absorb it and become too wet to make oil.  Next, they open up a tank and the fish go in there.  They get stirred up and pressed and they could put into another tank where they get squeezed so tight that the oil leaks out of the and through a tiny filter and into a big can.  When the can is full, they use the oil on top of food.  It is good because it has lot's of nutrients.  They call it the salvation fish because before white man came, they used the oil to survive.  I take fish oils too but I never actually knew how they were made until now.
Now I will tell you how they made candles.  First they would jump on the fish and squish it up and then it would get out into a tank to filter it.  They would then melt the fish together and after that was done they would tie it to the roof in a smoke house to let it dry.  Then they stuck them on sticks and voila, light the fish.  The oil would also help to make fires in the winter.  This is why they had to catch so many fish in the fall.

Mentos and Diet Coke

We did an experiment with Mentos and Diet Coke.  First of all we put the Diet Coke bottle in the snow.  Next we dropped a package of Mentos in the Diet Coke.  Poof!  IT exploded.  We tried doing it again but didn't work because all the carbon dioxide had left the first time.  I thought it was interesting because it made ice coke in the snow.  It was a physical reaction because even though the Coke exploded, it was still the same drink.  The Mentos just made the Diet Coke explode so it is the catalyst.
