Eulachon

Eulachon are small fish that you can use to make oil and candles.  The first nations people would catch the fish.  Then, they would put the fish in a big tank and clean them, but with not too much water because they would absorb it and become too wet to make oil.  Next, they open up a tank and the fish go in there.  They get stirred up and pressed and they could put into another tank where they get squeezed so tight that the oil leaks out of the and through a tiny filter and into a big can.  When the can is full, they use the oil on top of food.  It is good because it has lot's of nutrients.  They call it the salvation fish because before white man came, they used the oil to survive.  I take fish oils too but I never actually knew how they were made until now.
Now I will tell you how they made candles.  First they would jump on the fish and squish it up and then it would get out into a tank to filter it.  They would then melt the fish together and after that was done they would tie it to the roof in a smoke house to let it dry.  Then they stuck them on sticks and voila, light the fish.  The oil would also help to make fires in the winter.  This is why they had to catch so many fish in the fall.
